A little background information about me:

My name is Sarah Doel and I have always been a passionate about improving outcomes for people. I qualified with the Bayly School of Reflexology in 1995 after experiencing first-hand the positive benefits of Reflexology as both a student practitioner and a client. I worked as a Reflexologist for a year before making the decision to concentrate on my growing family. I kept my skills fresh by practising on friends and family.

In 2010 I started training as a nurse and on qualifying with a first class (Hons) degree, I worked in the emergency department for 18 months. I then relocated to a minor injury and illness unit (MIU) and following a return to university, I qualified as an Emergency Nurse Practitioner and worked in this role for a few years. This medicalised role involved the assessment, diagnosis, management and safe discharge or referral onwards, of injured or unwell adults and children.

I left this post to work across a range of MIUs in the county on an ad-hoc basis, giving me the opportunity, following a refresher course with the Bayly School of Reflexology, to start practising Reflexology professionally once again. The MIUs continue to enhance my assessment skills around a range of illnesses and injuries and provide both job satisfaction and a solid and flexible foundation for my Reflexology practice.

A historical context

Although there is no definitive timeline for Reflexology’s origins, there is an extensive range or artistic evidence depicting forms of foot and hand pressure treatments from a variety of cultures. Some of this dates back  thousands of years.

Reflexology was introduced to Britain in 1978 by Doreen Bayly, founder of the Bayly School of Reflexology, this being the official teaching body of The British Reflexology Association. Having trained with this school in 1995, I now attend regular updates to ensure my skills are of a high standard and my knowledge remains current.

Although the theory behind Reflexology is not fully understood, application of gently but firm pressure to reflex points using specific massage techniques, has resulted in Reflexology gaining momentum as a holistic treatment that works alongside conventional, medical treatment.
